Local language literacy is critical, but reading materials are scarce. Kids just don’t have enough to read. Through Hacking Literacy, IREX engaged the local programming community in Ethiopia to help solve the problem.
In partnership with CODE Ethiopia, Ethiopia Reads, iceaddis, the National Archive and Library Agency, and Save the Children, IREX hosted a Hackathon in October 2015 in which local programmers competed to create educational local language literacy apps. Winning teams were selected for the best alphabet, word, and storybook apps and have worked with IREX to further develop, finalize, and adapt their apps into multiple languages.

These apps will be used in IREX’s Beyond Access Ethiopia project. The project is working with 23 Ethiopian libraries to supplement classroom education by providing local language reading resources and promoting community engagement to enhance early grade reading.
Beyond Access Ethiopia is a collaboration between IREX, CODE, CODE Ethiopia, Ethiopia Reads, and the National Archive and Library Agency.
